Accept-Dance

by Lauri

During yoga class Wednesday morning, our teacher reminded us that, because of the design of our country, every 4 years roughly half of the country is deeply upset on election day.  Today, half of the U.S. (and beyond) is shattered and shocked. If you are among that half, this one’s (mostly) for you …

I’m reminded of one of my biggest learnings during the CTI Leadership program.  We were debriefing an exercise and my experience went something like this …

•    I said, “I feel like we just went from my Heaven to my Hell… “
•    The Leader replied, “The definition of suffering is wanting things to be other than what they are…”
•    I thought, “Why is he spouting trite bullshit at me now?”
•    He repeated, “The definition of suffering is wanting things to be other than what they are…”
•    For about 10 hours, I suffered.  I planned to quit the program, until finally, the learning came in…

Resisting what is creates suffering.
Accepting what is, while moving forward to create change, is Leadership.

It’s simultaneously a subtle and profound distinction.

I want to get there again now – to skip ahead to the moving forward to create change part…  And first, I have to grieve and then accept.  My intention today is to grieve.  Tomorrow, if it feels aligned and right, it will be acceptance.

If you wanted Hillary Clinton to win, I want to say to you “accept what is AND move forward to create change.  Your Voice Matters – and its needed in the world…”

If you wanted Donald Trump to win, I want to say to you “celebrate AND move forward to create change.  Your Voice Matters – and its needed in the world…”

We are the ones we have been waiting for …

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
– Martin Luther King Jr.

With love & passion,

P.S.  I think our stage manager also captured things very nicely in her email to us:

Rehearsal Schedule:
7-7:05: Hug each other
7:05-10:30: Work notes, and continue to make beautiful art that brings joy to our community…”
