How the Golden State Warriors Called Forth My Highest Self

by Lauri

Over the course of the past year I’ve become a huge Golden State Warriors fan. I played basketball in high-school, but hadn’t watched it much at all for over 25 years. After watching a few Golden State Warriors games last season (yes – the year that they lost it all) I was hooked.

I learned a few things from them that helped me change my outlook in order to move forward from my best self.

During more than one game this season the Warriors came from behind to win the game. After about three of these amazing comebacks, I realized that I was disaster tripping – I didn’t believe they could do it. When they were down by 20 points, I would throw up my hands and say “that’s it, it’s all over.” And then I would watch in awe as they proved it wasn’t over and came from behind to win the game.

How do they do it? What makes them so successful? If you watch basketball you might say “because they have Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Andre Igoudala … that’s how.”

Well … yes. And …

They check their egos at the door.
After losing the championship last year they could’ve barreled ahead with the same “stars” that they’d lost with. Instead, they signed another major star to the team. However, unlike other “dream teams” that have failed to gel despite their star power, the Warriors don’t operate from ego. Steph Curry gave up the ball to Kevin Durant. He could’ve hogged the ball, attempting to go for league MVP for the third straight year. Klay Thompson didn’t complain about giving up some of his points per game to Kevin Durant. Instead, he chipped in when and where needed. He played stellar defense all year and scored 60 points in 29 minutes of playing time during one game. By checking their egos they truly are a dream TEAM – they work together to accomplish more than any one of them could alone.

When they fall, they get back up and try again …

“If you don’t fall, how are you going to know what getting up is like.”
– Stephan Curry

The Warriors treat every failure as an opportunity, rather than treating a failure as the end. When they fail, they learn, improve and rally again … . and again and again.

They Believe

When they’re down, 15-25-30 points, they believe that they can come back – and then they do! They stay in the moment, rebound by rebound, steal by steal, point by point. They don’t let their Soul Suckers disaster trip or tell them “30 points – it can’t be done.” They know it can be done.

While all of these Warriors success traits helped me, believing called me forth the most during the past few weeks. I realized that, just like I was doing during the Warriors games, I was disaster-tripping in my business. Again and again I was turning one missed step into signs of doom for years to come. Believing is the gateway to the others for me. By practicing believing, I’m able to get back up after learning from my mistakes and find ways to work with others to create more than I can alone.

Which one of the three Warriors success traits is your gateway? Which could improve your life the most? For one week give it a try and see how it shifts things for you.
