‘Tis the Season

by Lauri

“Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”
– Charlie Brown

We’re in the midst of a powerful season. For some of us this season is connected to the celebration of a holiday – such as Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanza. For some, it’s a time of Winter Restoration. And, for some, it’s both.

I hear people say “Tis the Season” in two different ways. One is filled with the merry stuff holiday movies are made of. Honestly, that’s not the one I hear most often. The other is full of dread and resignation. People are sick, tired and stressed out and they say “Well, tis the season…”

Which version of the season do you want – the one full of resignation and stress, or the one full of the things that really matter in life?

I keep having the urge to make sure that we finish strong. I want that for myself and for everyone else. So I asked myself, “What does it mean to ‘finish strong’ in the middle of winter and the holiday season?”

I know one thing, “finishing strong” doesn’t mean working hard and running myself into the ground – that’s an old, outdated definition in my book.

Each year I pause and take a look at setting my course for the Holiday season. Most years, it seems that something inevitably jars me and reawakens me to remember what really matters. In 2012, it was the Sandy Hook shooting. In 2015, my mother passed away. In 2016, the election created a disturbance in the force that’s rippled through the world. Almost everything about 2020 has uprooted and untethered us. Tragedies and wake-up calls like these really put the typical holiday stress and drama in its place.  “Don’t sweat the small stuff” is putting it lightly.

For me, especially in the midst of challenging times, finishing the year strong in the middle of winter and the holiday season involves consciousness, intention and choice. I choose to let go of the small stuff.  I choose to love my family and hold them dear and consider myself blessed that we are alive and well and together.  I put my focus on love, warmth, open-heartedness, connection and giving – instead of mall traffic, hubbub and money.

As we embark on the final holiday stretch of this year, pause for a moment and consider…

What is important to you about this time of year?

After you identify what’s really important, set your intention to honor that in order to finish out the year strong.

With passion & love,
Lauri
