Women, We’ve Got to Stop Faking It!

Everywhere I look, I still see advice urging women to “lean in,” “project confidence,” and — most painfully — “fake it till you make it.”

Faking it is terrible advice.

It’s time to stop faking confidence, presence, empowerment — all of it.

When women give this advice to other women, their hearts are usually in the right place. They want us to feel powerful. They want us to step into spaces that haven’t always been welcoming. And, if we’re honest, many of us were taught to fake confidence long before we ever felt it — so we pass on what we were given.

But pairing the words “fake” and “confidence” together creates a quiet war inside the body.
It splits us.
It disconnects us from your truth.
It tells us that who we are is insufficient — so we must pretend your way into belonging.

Think of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
She already had the ruby slippers.
She didn’t need to fake anything — she needed to remember what she carried.

You do, too.
You are enough.
And your confidence doesn’t need to be manufactured — it needs to be embodied.

So the question becomes:
If we’re not faking it, how do we step into confidence when we don’t feel it yet?

Let’s clear up one thing first:

Outside-In ≠ Faking It.

There’s solid research behind the relationship between posture and emotion.
The body speaks to the nervous system — and the nervous system speaks back.
If you slump, you feel smaller.
If you breathe deeper and take up space, your system responds:
awake, alive, creative, capable.

This is not pretending.
This is partnering with your body’s wisdom.

Here’s the distinction:

Inside-Out

You feel something first — and your body expresses it naturally.

Outside-In

You shape the body first — and your emotional life responds and expands to meet it.

Both are valid.
Both are powerful.
Neither requires you to betray your authenticity.

So from this moment forward, let’s retire the old prescription:

Don’t “fake it.”
Embody it.

Put your body in the shape of your most confident self.
Then — gently, without force — let your energy, breath, and presence rise to fill that shape.

It’s not pretending.
It’s remembering.
It’s reclaiming what was always yours.

Do this in earnest for a week.
Watch what shifts.
Watch how much easier it becomes to stand, speak, and lead as the most grounded, radiant version of you — no faking required.
