We spend much of our lives learning how to fit in — to color inside the lines, to follow the rules, to meet expectations that were often never ours to begin with.
But what if success isn’t about fitting in at all?
What if it’s about finding the shape that’s uniquely yours — and daring to lead, speak, and live from there?
Many of us were taught that approval comes from performance. We learned to adapt to the boxes placed in front of us — in school, in our careers, in how we communicate. For a while, those boxes help us survive. But over time, they start to shrink the parts of us that make us original, creative, and alive.
As Lauren Goldberg, a self-discovery and leadership coach, shared in our recent conversation, she “learned to adapt to a box that said, if you survive here, doors will open for you.” And they did — for a while. But the cost was steep.
Now, she’s helping others find freedom from those old systems and expectations. Her work focuses on clearing the fog of toxic professionalism, perfectionism, and the myth that we must specialize to succeed.
“We have a world full of generalists — people who connect the dots, see patterns, and bring innovation through diverse experiences. They’re set up perfectly for leadership.”
Her metaphor of embracing her “kush-ball shape” is a reminder that our brilliance often comes from the places where we don’t fit neatly at all.
Speaking from Authenticity
When Lauren and I explored what it means to speak authentically, we found that the same principles apply whether you’re building a business, leading a team, or introducing yourself at a networking event.
It’s not about reciting the right words. It’s about setting an intention and being brave enough to be seen.
With just one breath and one small shift, your energy can move from talking to connecting.
Reflections to Try
- What expectations or “boxes” are you still trying to fit into?
- Where are you following a template instead of trusting your truth?
- How might your unique “shape” be exactly what your voice — and the world — needs?
