This is what high-stakes leadership asks for and rarely gets. Not the absence of feeling, but the capacity to witness it without being consumed by it.
In yoga, they’d call it the witness consciousness. In neuroscience, they’d call it the prefrontal cortex overriding the amygdala.
Whatever you call it, it’s trainable. And it’s forged in exactly the kind of conditions most of us spend our whole lives trying to avoid.
Some of us are attached to our capacity to push, drive, control outcomes. We’re so proud of all we’ve accomplished with those options that letting go, even for a moment, can feel like failure, or worse, like weakness.
Surrender Is Not the Same as Giving Up

It means you stop managing the experience and start meeting it.
Listen. Receive. Respond.
Leading from there, through both the crisis and the moment after, is some of the most untamed leadership there is.
And the leaders who learn it don’t just stumble into it. They choose it.
Sometimes, like Savio, after having nowhere left to hide.
